How the overtime rate is set
The ordinary hourly rate is monthly wages ÷ 26 working days ÷ 8 hours. Overtime is paid at twice that. On ₹26,000 a month the ordinary rate is ₹125 an hour and the overtime rate is ₹250.
Daily and weekly limits, counted once
Overtime can arise two ways: hours beyond the daily limit, and hours beyond 48 in the week. The calculator works out both and pays the larger, so the same hour is never paid twice.

The second week also has no rest day. Every worker is entitled to one day off in seven, and paying overtime does not replace it, so the calculator flags it.

- The daily limit, and the spread-over: the time from starting work to finishing, including breaks. Many states allow up to 12 hours.
- A four-day week of 12-hour days, where the state has notified it, as long as the week stays within 48 hours.
- The maximum overtime hours in a quarter.

Consent and records
Under the OSH Code, overtime needs the worker's consent. Women can work night shifts only with their consent and the safety arrangements the state rules require. Record overtime hours in the attendance register alongside normal hours; an inspector checks the two together.
